Touristic Attractions of Chimborazo province.

CHIMBORAZO PROVINCE

In prehistoric ages was inhabited by the well organized Puruháes race, which formed a kingdom as powerful as Quito.  The family that ruled in Puruhá was settled in Cacha and was known as the Duchicelas, which gave to his country great men such as Epiclachima, Calicuchima, Huayna Palcón, Paccha, Ccha and Atahualpa.

 

  This magical province located in the center of the Ecuadorian Andes is filled with wonderful places:

 

Chimborazo snow-capped mountain

It is the highest snow-capped mountain in Ecuador with a height of 20.702 feet. Here we can find two shelters, the first one located at 15.748 feet, accessible by car; the second one at 16.404 feet where we can get climbing, under the supervision of a specialized mountain guide.

NARIZ DEL DIABLO.

The worldly known trip by train to “La Nariz del Diablo” is one of the most distinguished and fantastic train trips of the World, during which you can see the well cultivated Andean lands that will give you the illusion of beautiful carpets blending right in with the landscapes of the wilderness. You will travel 249 miles of extension of the Andean central valley that was properly named “the volcanoes avenue” in 1802 by the german explorer Alexander Von Humboldt because this magnificent and unique place of the planet is decorated by numerous volcanoes, a lot of them still active and some of great height and size that stand out with his endless snows as the majestic Chimborazo.

This trip by train leaves from the city of Riobamba to the south, going trough some small but beautiful towns situated on the mountains. Then the train arrives to the town Alausí where begins his impetuous descent trough “La Nariz del Diablo”.

This incredible engineering work cristalized during the presidentship of the General Eloy Alfaro allow us to appreciate how the mountain was sculpted as a zigzag towards the sides of it. Because of this, the train climbs from the 5.906 to 8.530 feet, it goes forward and backward trough the rails, ascending and descending this sloped hilltop.

 

OZOGOCHE.

It is a Lacustrian Complex of approximately 60 lagoons of different sizes. Magtayán and Cubillina lagoons are the first ones you can see from the road. In this lagoons take place some curious events, for example, the first days of September birds come to die in their waters. On Cubillina lagoon we can see some kind of little weaves that remind us of the sea.

ALTILLO.

This Lacustrian Complex has lagoons of incredible beauty; among them are the Negra, Colay, Cuyo and Magdalena lagoons with unique characteristics such as an islet with original vegetation from the Andean Woods.

COLTA.

It is located 20 minutes away of Riobamba by car, in front of Balbanera Church. On his shore grows reeds used for the confection of articles such as mats and baskets. Next to the lagoon we will find the rails for the railroad of the south that until today brings passengers with touristic purposes.

This is one of the first churches built by the Spanish on Latin America. His front is carved on stone and it lodges the image of the virgin Maria Natividad de Balbanera.
